Default Does anyone suffer from sciatica on this forum

In the last 4 months my sciatic nerve has been killing me. Forget hot water bottles, Forger pain killers as you cannot take pain killers all your life but this time this one I have has been giving me heaps. I can stand upright i'm ok but if I sit down or try to tie my shoe laces I'm F!@#$%^%$#@#$%^#ed and in super pain. This is possible my third bad one I have had in my life. I did not pinch a nerve, I don't even know how I did it it just slowly came and now its really giving me heaps.
Do other on this forum get them or am I just an unlucky prick.

Yes karma because I never listened to my dad when I was young to use my knees when lifting something heavy. I stuffed my Back when I was in the early 20's and it has never healed and has given me heaps all my life.

TCM, yes I'm a follower of TCM, recommends to treat sciatica with acupressure. Your wife can do it. It can be learned within 15 minutes.

    Only best experiences with this.

By TCM, my best guess is you mean Traditional Chinese Medicine, yes very good.

I have recently experienced sciatica, first time in my life & my wife suggested seeing a Bowen Therapist she visits when her back gives her a problem, who specialises in back pain & muscle relief therapy.
I'm glad she did as the practitioner used the meridian points of pressure & release with her fingers & thumbs to release & relax the muscles involved.

I felt a little bruised after the therapy, however the end result is pain relief without medication & comfortable sleep.

I'm converted as I was a sceptic until I couldn't sleep with the sciatic pain in my back & my right leg going numb.
    Cheers, Tiny

I've suffered sciatica for 50 years, no drug works on it in my experience, sure you get a buzz and a numbing. But after awhile it makes no difference, except you are really out of it and useless. Tried chiropractors, physio's, massage and a few others Asian things. What really works for me is osteopathy, needling, kiniseology, associated fitness and correcting my posture.

Worked out a few triggers for it I wasn't aware of, by writing down each time what I was doing including my body position. Was amazed at how some simple actions can trigger such pain, now I concentrate of whatever I do, to make sure I don't end the day on my back in agony and even lying down can be a problem sometimes. Now I understand how it works, it's not that hard to avoid an incident and go many months without it effecting me.

I've had lower back pain and sciatica for about 4 months. It can be crippling as my left leg suffers real pain. I have got a lot of relief from Lyrica. It takes 1 to 2 weeks to become effective. Couple it with regular Panadol, I can get around OK for most of the day.

The Lyrica seems to put the pain into the background, and the Panadol numbs the muscles a tad. Works for me. This is recent treatment, but it seems that as the pain fades, then I can accomplish things physically that strengthen the back muscles. Lyrica is not a pain killer.

When I have trouble I have to sit upright for a while and kind of reset the back. The most comfortable and relieving seat I have happens to be the driving seat of my car. Five minutes in it and I feel heaps better.

Sciatica f*cking sucks. Worst and most depressing affliction I have ever had.

+1 for Lyrica. Sciatica is merciless and, in my case, completely unpredictable. Thirty years of lifting heavy things has left me with scoliosis that only exacerbates the acute periods of sciatica.

+1 again. Seating position has a profound impact on how I manage the pain. The effects of a day of poor posture can be brutal. A nice long haul drive can be very therapeutic.

That's a real bummer for you having scoliosis, must be hard to get relief from.

    I have Piriformis syndrome.

    According to my research the bulk of sciatica sufferers have Piriformis Syndrome;
Your piriformis is a small muscle in your pelvis that lies over the top of your sciatic
nerve. When this muscle becomes inflamed or suffers trauma, the muscle puts
pressure on the sciatic nerve underneath and causes you discomfort in the form of
    pain, burning or numbness.
Because a muscle and nerve are involved, the potential for pain is double what it
would be if only one or the other were affected.
Of course there are other causes such as Herniated Disc, Spinal Stenosis & Spondylolisthesis.
    Cheers, Tiny

I have it on and off for the last 20 years in both legs. Fortunately now it is managable but years ago I thought I would end up a cripple, the pain was that bad.

After years of poor results I now find pain killers work until the flareup subsides then gentle stretching to improve mobility of the lower back. I now never lift anything heavy off the floor...guaranteed to give me weeks of problems.

I'm the same. I try not to pick anything over say 10 Kg anymore. Sometime like now when my back is bad my poor old wife carries everything and I have been given dirty looks. Lately we have purchased those Oldies trolleys and they are ok but make you feel older than what you are.

I'm in the same situation. Its hard to lose the gut if its too painful to exercise.

My left leg gets so bad at times that sitting is the only thing to do.

i cant stand still in one spot for more than a few minutes
i cant drive for more than an hour
i wont lift anything over 10kg if possible but at times will have to pick up a bag of cement
as for posture when sitting i must be on a angle if i can raise my legs even better but i cant sit up straight
i cant bend down to pick anything up unless i bend my knees and sort of squat down
if i carry a weight then i have to balance with a weight in my other hand

i take no drugs unless it is to a point of being debilitating , i have been this way since my mid 20's due to a car accident

if i do something and i get pain i will remember what i did and do it differently until i find a way that does not hurt.
dont say linux if i wanted it id install it

I thought I too had pinched the sciatic nerve as I had experienced a very sharp debilitating pain crossing from the left side of the Pelvis to the front of the Right Thigh then extending down to the back of the Calf.
The first time it hit me was when it woke me up one morning and I felt as though someone had ripped my Right Leg off let alone the pain in the lower left side of the Back.
This lasted for the next three days but diminishing each day to enable me to get about although with difficulty.

At first the Doctor sort of agreed with me that it was Sciatica, theres basically no treatment for it any way and your not going to die from it although it feels like you are.
Fortunately for me this only occurred intermittently and when I felt it coming on, if I stopped and rested, it generally went away.

By now I knew where it started and where it went etc and its effects, after about the 4th episode I was able to more fully explain to the Doctor, (I whinged actually) he investigated more thoroughly and diagnosed it was caused by movement in the Sacroiliac, where the spine sits in a bony area that sits on the Pelvis.(GOOGLE it).

Fortunately for me the simple exercises available work and because this is a 'physical' problem rather than a 'Nerve' issue as Sciatica is, it can be minimised almost completely for me.
I stand unequivicably behind everything I say , I just dont ever remember saying it !!

    Default Bloodburst

    Hi all,

When I look at my thigh it looks like someone has dropped an egg on it except that all the splashes are red veins like ripples in a pond. There is also a dark grey vein running from my knee to my hip.

I find it almost impossible to get a comfortable position to sleep in (Wyborowa in copious quantities sometimes helps) but there are many days when the pain is bloody unbearable.

I used to be a junior weightlifter when I was 15/16 years old (250Lbs squat, clean and jerk) boy was I proud. If there was any way I could clear this period of my life out I would give my right leg to do so, that's where my current pain is.
