Default Using a VAST and Foxtel together

    Hi guys,

I am a bit of a newbie to this, but I have foxtel in one room and I have a point or wallplate in the upstairs bedroom that used to be used for Foxtel. So what I was thinking of was connecting a VAST box to the upstairs bedroom. I have a couple of queries. I have read that you would need a switch on the LNB to recieve both Fox and VAST. Also am doing anything illegal by using the Fox dish to add vast? And finally is it possible to get the VAST stations in metro Melbourne not just the ABC ones. I am interested in the ABC ones, but just wanted to know if I can get the others. Sorry about this I am a bit of a newbie.

    Thanks in advance

    Hutch.

What you need and probably have is a dual out Lnb. Have a look at you dish and Yu should see 2 leads coming from the Lnb. So you can connect a vast box no probs. Just get you box activate at a false address or get traveller activation.

Generally a Vast STB will work on a Foxtel aligned satellite dish .....

I suggest you try it & see if you have any problems ..... we may then be able to advise you depending on what if anything is happening .....

All Australians are allowed to register for the Vast ABC & SBS channels .....

But to get the Commercial Channels Authorized you need to be:

    1. A Vast Traveler Registration (caravan etc moving though a vast area)
    2. Live in a remote Vast Broadcasting Coverage Area
    3. Be in a Television "black spot area" & not be able to get normal TV reception from your local TV broadcaster (may need to verify this)

    Have a look here

It may also depend in you live an apartment building or a house as "Foxtel Lite" is used in some unit blocks & has only certain Foxtel channels available ..... which may also effect Vast channels

& as Leroy said above if you have two cables coming from the LNB on your satellite dish it is a good sign ...

The 'switch' on the LNB you refer to is called a multiswitch.

this is required to add additional outlets if all existing LNB outlets are in use.

In your case, if there is an existing connected spare LNB outlet, you will not require a multiswitch for a VAST decoder.

Is it legal to use the Foxtel dish? Technically, it's usually against their terms and conditions to alter a Foxtel installation, but as you are not actually making any changes, just plugging in a decoder into an existing outlet, I don't see it as an issue.

Regardless, Foxtel would have not know anyway.

The options for obtaining VAST in Melbourne are in the posts above.

I have VAST connected to same dish as Foxtel (dual polarity - dual output LNBf), my set up is thru a Spaun multiswitch as both my boxes require 2 inputs being multituner boxes.

For VAST in metro Melbourne you will need black spot certification or Travellers Authorisation which requires you to Declare that you are a genuine traveller (they don't ask for the rego of your caravan or motor home though) this authorisation needs to be renewed every six months requiring 30 seconds of effort on line to fill in the form.
    Cheers, Tiny

    .

Ok will this accept the VAST smart card. Or would I have to get the VAST STB. .

You cannot obtain a VAST card-only and VAST cards are paired to the device they are supplied with, either a VAST decoder as per your above link, or a VAST CAM/CARD.
