Perhaps the concern is that you must be a licensed cabler to run/terminate/connect any data/voice/alarm cabling if it connects in any way to a carrier's network.
Hi Guys,
I'm new to this subject, basically I'm planning to install (most probably) Bosch solution 2000 with IP module - because I want to integrate the alarm with my home automation software (HomeSeer).
Problem is - it almost impossible to find any info, I just want to buy the hardware and install myself, but all distributors want to install and charge 300% margin. And saying that I need to have a security license even to buy alarm hardware, which is complete BS (I verified with lrd-privatesecurity-mgr@police.vic.gov.au).
If anybody could give me some tips on where I can buy the hardware without huge margin, and what I need to make a basic alarm system which I can program myself, and integrate with HomeSeer (so I need documentation for IP communication protocol)
Please...
Thank you

No, their concern is to make profit on installation, which exceeds the costs of hardware. Here's the reply from Vic.Police:
Please be advised that you do not require a registration to install a security alarm in your own home. If you intend to provide the services of install and advice security equipment to others then you will be required to apply for a registration.
Yes, I'm aware of the regulations, however, I am also pointing out the legal requirement re: any cabling work, which must be installed by a licensed and registered cabler, regardless if it is for a DIY alarm for your own home or not.... just in case you were not aware of that requirement.
Anyway, any advise on the subject?
try ebay or alibaba
While Vic Police might know state law, commonwealth law has its own regulations and you must be a registered cabler to do the cabling, I would not expect Vic Police to be up to date with all laws Australia wide.
You will also find that most wholesalers don't want to deal with the general public as the tech support side is not setup for the average person, (I do not know your technical ability however this is the response I know from the wholesalers in Perth)
Anyways guys, I've got confirmation in writing, so it's not my concern.
My question is - which alarm panels have external access API and where can I buy stuff without installation markup?
I do know the answer and I am sure others here do as well, while it may not be law for a wholesaler to sell to you, he also has an obligation to ensure his equipment is used in a manner it is intended too, this would include if you have the relevant skills etc to install the product,
One Part is a Security License and the second which you manage to avoid is that you also need to have a cabling registration to the do ANY cabling work that maybe connected to a carriers network, so you do not meet one or two, one you can get away with if you are doing it at home, but as mentioned, wholesalers are not geared to support end users, most run yearly courses for a products etc, some of these are free and some up to $1000 depends on the product. The second point (cablers registration) you cant avoid
Most of us have spent considerable amount of money obtaining our licenses and learning products, we don't just jump onto Austech and ask for answers. The guys I use for help we share information, give and take, (that seems to work well in this industry) however asking for help here and then dismissing the information you receive which is all above board.
Its like asking a mechanic how to bleed brakes and not paying him for his time, might want to seek out a decent security consultant, pay him for his time and knowledge
Good luck with your quest.
That's what I mean - all about money. Is it so difficult so say something like Bosch Solution 2000 with B246 IP module?
I understand you reasoning for wanting to do it yourself. I also understand the reluctance of suppliers to supply any information. They have a duty of care, both to their customers AND their suppliers. If every Tom, Dick, and Harry started installing "Brand X" high end security system without following the correct instructions (some of which may require specialist expertise) the company that produces "Brand X" will get a bad name through no fault of their own. Some, untrained installers might actually manage to connect mains power to the telephone line. Not a pretty thought. If the system is not competently installed, you might also end up with effectively NO security at all. Insurance companies may not honour any claims because the security was not of a standard....
The blokes here who work in the industry ARE more than willing to assist, but, only so far as it does not compromise, your safety and the reputation of their industry.
I'm out of my mind, but feel free to leave a message...
I wouldn't agree that "blokes here who work in the industry" are more capable than myself, I've seen quite a few idiots which I payed lot of money and ended up finishing up myself.
I have more than 30 years experience in electronics and software, I worked on mission critical systems like control systems for nuclear power plants, industrial control systems, Australian Synchrotron, control systems for solar energy plants, etc.
So home security is nothing comparing to my experience. And I'm not interested in explanations why you can't give me the information. I'm interested in the information.

No problems, I'm actually in contact with Bosch directly, they are a bit more helpful
What do you mean?
They sent me instructions on setting-up B426-M IP Module and example source code for communication the the panel.
And my question is NOT about installing the alarm system. I want to investigate which systems available in Australia have local communication ability and API documentation for developers.
It doesn't mater why will install the system. I need to choose the system first. And I did contact the distributors, they don't have sufficient technical knowledge and expertise in this area. And they only supply one or two brands.
That's why I tried this forum. But I'm afraid it was a mistake.
